Many scholars debate if Melliferax is even a dragon at all (“It has wings and guards a horde of treasure, if that doesn’t fit the description, I don’t know what will!” proclaims High Mage Anturial), however the segmented carapace and general appearance lead most to believe that Melliferax is more of a massive insect. It also seems to follow the same behavior as common honeybees, namely collecting massive amounts of pollen from the wild and bringing it back to its lair. The massive amount of honey made by Melliferax has been known to ferment in the deepest part of the lair, forming a mead said by many to be more delicious than any made by human hands. Young newlyweds often sneak into Melliferax’s lair to sample the mead, as is customary on honeymoons. Luckily the great serpent seems to not mind, and can often be seen partaking in the mead itself! How lucky for those lovestruck explorers!
